BORED OF DEPUTIES
1,247 levies cancelled Stop paying

Are you bored of deputies?

£35 a year. To this Board.

Every member of an affiliated UK synagogue pays the Board of Deputies a “Communal Contribution” via their membership bill — about £35 per year. For centuries the Board has been on the wrong side of Jewish history. Stop paying, in under a minute.

Pick your synagogue, pick where the money should go instead, and we’ll draft the email. You read it. You send it.

FAQ

Is this site “antisemitic” or “anti-communal”?
No. It is built by, and aimed at, British Jews who believe the Board of Deputies has at key moments worked against the interests of the community it claims to represent, and who want the freedom to direct their voluntary communal funds elsewhere. Disagreeing with the Board is not disagreeing with British Jewry; the Board itself is not synonymous with British Jewry.
If I stop paying the levy, am I leaving my synagogue?
No. The levy is a separate, voluntary line on your membership bill. Your shul keeps every penny it would otherwise have forwarded to the Board.
Why is my synagogue not on the list?
The seed list draws from the published directories of the United Synagogue, Federation of Synagogues, Movement for Progressive Judaism, Masorti Judaism, and the S&P Sephardi Community. It is not exhaustive. If your shul is missing, send the same wording manually to your synagogue’s membership office — the email preview is reusable verbatim.
Why does the To: address default to the umbrella body?
Because verifying a current, monitored email address for every UK synagogue is a multi-week task and stale addresses bounce. Umbrella body addresses are published, monitored and reliable. Edit the To: line in your mail client if you know your synagogue’s direct address.
Does this site collect my data?
No personal data. The form runs in your browser. The only thing the site tracks is an anonymous count of how many people have clicked “Send my email” — that’s the “levies cancelled so far” number. No identifying information is logged.
Has anyone already done this?
Yes, lots of people. Additionally, Chigwell & Hainault Synagogue formally voted to stop its Communal Contribution in 2024 on “value for money” grounds. Cockfosters & North Southgate Synagogue is reported to be considering the same. Individual members across the United Synagogue have been quietly opting out for years.
Who built this?
A British Jew. The site is independent and unaffiliated with any of the charities it lists as alternative recipients.
